How to Choose Dog Food: Dog Food Classes Explained

When learning how to choose dog food, the first step is understanding the four main categories on the market — this helps you make the right choice without overspending.

šŸ’°

ECONOMY

Grain-heavy, low meat content. Fine as a temporary option.

⭐

PREMIUM

Better meat content, fewer artificial additives.

šŸ†

SUPER-PREMIUM

High meat content, no artificial additives, easy to digest.

🌿

HOLISTIC

Whole meat listed first, natural ingredients, grain-free.

What to Look for on the Label?

Four types of dog food bags labeled economy, premium, super-premium, and holistic, each with a bowl of kibble

Ingredients are listed by weight in descending order. Meat should be first — and specific: chicken, beef, or salmon.

  • āœ…Specific meat or fish listed first

  • āœ…No sugar, caramel colouring, or artificial flavourings

  • āœ…Fibre sources: potato, peas, carrots

  • āŒAvoid: "meat and animal derivatives" without species specified

  • āŒAvoid: corn syrup, BHA, BHT in the ingredients

Dry Food, Raw Diet, or Wet Food?

  • 🄣

Dry kibble — convenient, long shelf life, great for dental health. Always provide fresh water alongside.

  • 🄩

Raw / home-cooked diet — meat, vegetables, grains. Requires time and knowledge of nutritional balance.

  • 🄫

Wet food — great for seniors and puppies. Should not fully replace dry food.

šŸ’” Tip: Don't mix dry and raw food in the same meal — it can strain your dog's digestion.

SECTION 04

How Much and How Often Should You Feed?

Feeding amounts depend on weight, age, and activity level. Always follow the package guidelines.

Age

Feeding Frequency

🐾 Puppy under 6 months

3–4 times a day

🐾 Puppy 6–12 months

2–3 times a day

šŸ• Adult dog

2 times a day

šŸ•ā€šŸ¦ŗ Senior dog

2 times a day, smaller portions

Why Dogs Always Beg — and What to Do About It

Dogs are descended from wolves who never knew when their next meal would come. Begging is a survival instinct, not genuine hunger. The sad puppy eyes at the bowl are manipulation — and owners unknowingly reinforce it.

  • šŸ•Feed on a strict schedule — your dog will adapt within 1–2 weeks

  • šŸ½ļøRemove the bowl after 15–20 minutes, even if food remains

  • 🚫Never feed from the table — ever

  • šŸŽTreats should be no more than 10% of daily caloric intake

āš ļø Overfeeding is dangerous:excess weight in dogs leads to joint problems, heart disease, and can shorten their life by several years.

🐾 Proper nutrition is the foundation of your dog's health and longevity. One quality food, a consistent schedule, and a little willpower — and your pet will thank you with energy and a shiny coat.
